What do “we” and “they” mean by “NATURAL”? Is it just me, or does it have an obscure aura about it? According to the Natural Product Association, the natural standard is anything coming from flora, fauna or the earth, except petroleum derived products. This statement in itself is a walking contradiction, as petroleum derived products [...]
Our primary criteria for calling a raw material "natural" is that it must be made entirely from renewable, non-endangered resources. This means petroleum and petroleum-derived products are out, since there's a finite supply. Our policy constantly leads to questions about minerals, though, so it's not perfect.
We also have a "cruelty-free" policy, which means no animal byproducts (although we're iffy on insects and lanolin). We deliberately don't conflate the two policies, as some other "natural" product companies do - that's where some people get the idea that only vegetation-based products can be natural.
