  • Hi, my name is David Carleton, I have a twitter and facebook account. I am not marketing , I am a hair colorist, cutter, stylist. I am, The Head Mechanic. I am looking to understand the needs of my clients.
  • Hello from Hong Kong! I started formulating beginning of this year. During my quest into cosmetic science, which started late last year, I realized that I am almost alone in this part of the world. Hoping to meet formulators from around the globe and to share experiences. At the same time to gain more insight about cosmetic science and to brush up my chemistry.

    Cheers

  • Hi All!!
I'm very excited about this course. I, too, just began formulating this year with plant derived ingredients. I am hoping to learn more about cosmetic science in this program.

  • Hi everyone!

I am very very excited about this course. I have been waiting for something like this, so thank you Perry and to your team of experts! I really enjoy learning about formulating and think it is the perfect balance between science and art!

    Best Regards,
    Cindy
  • Hi everyone. It's so exciting to be a part of this class. I have been making skin care for about 8 years now. BUT, as a friend of mine always says, when you are formulating on your own, "you don't know what you don't know." I am looking forward to learning some of what I don't know in this class. Plus, it's great to meet all of you fellow formulators. Thanks, Perry.

  • Greetings everyone!
I have a small business making soaps, lotions and other skin care products. I'm taking this class in order to learn more about ingredients and formulating because I want my products to be the best they possibly can be.
    Kind regards,
    Lucy
  • Hi Everyone,

I am Kaila, I have been working with cosmetics for about 13 years, but am primarily self taught, primarily from old textbooks and formularies from the 20's, 30's, 40's and 50's. I am looking forward to going "back to school" and also giving myself an excuse to get into the formulating lab and play with ingredients that I have but never have a chance to mess around with. My special knowledge base is in color additives, but this is a very small part of puzzle.
  • Hi Everyone,
My name is Eileen and I am a RN by profession. Although I have a background in science ( BSN) I am a real newbie to all things chemistry . Can anyone recommend a textbook that would be a basic introduction to chemistry?

I signed up for the course bacause I was tired spending money for high end lipsticks that all looked and felt the same, so I thought I would learned to formulate my own. After attempting to comprehend Lesson 1, I think I'm in for rude awakening!

Thank you Perry and everyone for the interesting imput.

  • Hey everyone!

My name is Vanessa Rivera and I graduated last year with a B.A. in Biology. I live in NJ. I just started working in the Cosmetics industry 3 months ago. I am a Laboratory Assistant in QC at a raw material supplier. My dream is to formulate cosmetic products. I absolutely love cosmetic science!! Thanks Perry for creating this wonderful online course!

  • It is great to be here! I was educated as a medical technologist/microbiologist and spent 14 years working as a clinical microbiologist in a hospital laboratory. I loved doing that but gave it up when I realized that I couldn't juggle everything else in my life. So I have been a stay-at-home mom since my last child was born.

About 13 years ago I spent a lot of money buying a product that sounded too good to be true, cost way too much, and didn't keep any promises; then I took a look at the ingredient list. That's when it hit me that I should be able to figure out how to make something better that actually DID perform. I started out just experimenting with very little information and the results of my early experiments were not very elegant, but I learned as I went along. I have developed my own skincare line that I just sell "word of mouth" from my home.

I love formulating and know that I am going to learn things in this class that will help me to make my products better.

  • Hi Everyone! I have been formulating for three years, but only making hand soaps, and sanitizers, some creams, and a hair conditioner at my previous position. Now, I am the sole formulator at my new position, and will be exploring new forms, so now is a great time for me to learn about other types of cosmetic products, so this is a great course. Thank you Perry!

  • Hello everybody!

I'm Judy and work as a Web Developer in NY. Experimenting with lotions and creams in my kitchen is a hobby of mine.

Thank you Perry for designing this course in such a simplistic, easy to understand way so that it also caters to someone from a non-science background.

I'd like to try out the formulae discussed in the course and I'm hoping to rent a lab in the Edison, NJ area. Would anyone be aware of one that I can rent?

    Thanks in advance,
    Judy
  • @Judy - you might try contacting Steve Herman.  His contact information is on the Podcast page that features him.  I don't know if he has a lab but he might know someone who can help you.
  • Thanks Dana and Perry for your advice.

    Judy
  • Hey Dana,

I just read your message. I would love to talk to you! My email is vanessa.e.rivera@alum.wellesley.edu. Please shoot me an email! Thanks!!
  • Hi,
my name is Justine, I'm 34 and a first time mother, my son just turn 5 1/2 months. Together with my husband we are running a small soap business which needs to expand, if you would like to have a look search for clemantinesabun. As you can see I am not a native english speaker. I am German but am living since 7 years in Turkey.
My education till now is as Nutrion and Home economics scientist, a double certificate as beauty therapist (german and turkish), basic herbalism and aromatherapy and since two years I am working on my molecular science bachelor with the Open University. Because of my son I needed a break with this and this course fits great into my time.

I hope we all enjoy this course and will learn a lot.

    Justine
  • Hello Justine,
Welcome to the program!  We look forward to helping you expand your business.  Feel free to start any new discussions you want.

  • Hi everyone. I'm Robert, and I've got more than ten years experience as a cosmetic chemist at various companies. For the past three years though, I've been working as an ink formulation chemist for Sanford (the Sharpie folks), so I'm taking this course to get back up to speed as a cosmetic chemist while I'm looking for a job. I'd love to help anyone out with problems they're having in cosmetic chemistry or cosmetics generally, and although my focus has been primarily in color cosmetics, I've had enough experience formulating other types of cosmetics and personal care products that I can usually give helpful advice.

  • @sheltgirl - Eileen, the practice of Cosmetic Chemistry has very little to do with Chemistry as it's being taught in schools until you get into Organic Chemistry. I'll try to find some references or articles for you to read.

@vrivera - Vanessa, if you ask around, you'll find that about a quarter to a third of practicing cosmetic chemists got their start as technicians (as I did). You are doing the right thing to be able to move up.

@jpanic - 90% of all cosmetic formula's can be made in a kitchen with a relatively standard set of utensils/appliances. Some improvised equipment can take care of the rest. The only exception is pressed powder, which can be approximated if need be. (I can tell horror stories from experience, though) The advantages a lab has are a readily available supply of raw materials. lots of beakers, and overhead mixers with hot plates. It should be possible to acquire the equipment and raws for about what it will cost to rent some lab space, if you look around for bargains.
  • Hi Everyone,

I am also very excited to start this awesome course. I already have my own skin care line that I design myself. But I don't manufacture it myself. I was lucky to find a lab who is doing it for me in very small batches. Even though they are doing a great job, they are not always flexible with the "crazy" dream of a product I often have in my head. So I often have to tone down my vision. This is why I would like to learn all the ins and outs about formulating business so I can grow as a person and make my business grow.
It would be great to connect with everyone too :-)

  • Hello.
My name is Dave. I work at a major fragrance house in NYC. I'm a tech in our Fine Fragrance labs. In addition to alcoholic solutions, I frequently have to apply our products in cosmetic formulations. A few years ago I was given a special project to make established formulas for a big client presentation and I became hooked on cosmetic science. Since then I've been trying to resurrect some classic formulas and modify them for consumer safety. Most of the "hazards" are perceived hazards, but I have found a few legitimate concerns (and one that was terrifying). My ultimate goal is to formulate new and innovative cosmetics to meet the demands of our marketing group, and to not have to work on the formulas of other affiliates for a change. After all, we're NYC. We should take the lead on something occasionally.

    -----Dave
  • Hey, Dave.

Feel free to ask safety questions here - most cosmetic chemists have a different perspective on cosmetic safety than the fear-mongering crowd that spews pseudo scientific nonsense out onto the internet.
  • Hello evrybody,
I am Adnène Tunisian pharmacist curently in France (Paris). I still pursuing studies to become an industrial pharmacist specialist.
Of all the galenic forms that exist, I was always very fascinated by the semi-solid forms (and I don't know why :-)),that's why I'm very interested in cosmetic formulation.
In cosmetic science I can say that I'am autodidacte. By book reading I have improved a little my knowledge and even created "theorically" formulas. But theese Fomulas are on papers and I can not find anyone to criticize them and to advise me. That's why I join this forum (thanks to Perry).
I hope that I can find here all the knowledge that I lack via your questions, answers and topics.
Finally I'd like you to excuse my very bad english :shame: and I wish you all happy new year 2011!
  • Hello Adnene
Welcom to the forum!  Feel free to post any questions you have.  We'll try to get answers for you.

  • Hi All, I am glad to have  been accepted into the forum. I completed a certificate in aromatherapy 5 years ago and have a great interest in making my own natural skin care products. Have been practising all this time, and use all sorts of base oils, herbal extracts, infusions, making luxurious butters, lotions and creams. I am also a Podiatrist. I peeked at the forum this afternoon and have already picked up heaps of tips. I just need help with putting together essential oils and fragrances to flavour my products. I do not have so much talent there. Thanks for sharing with me and I hope to be an active participant. Katie
  • Great to have you here Katie!  Feel free to start a discussion with any of your questions.
  • Hi everybody! I am glad to be here. Thank you Perry for allow me to be a part of this community.
I am a food scientist, but always was interested in cosmetics. There are some small similarities in these industries. I hope to satisfy my curiosity and be a part of this group of professionals.

  • Hello Lucy.  It's great to have a food scientist.  There is definitely some overlap between our industries.  In fact, when I started working at Alberto Culver we had food scientists working right along side the cosmetic chemists.
  • Hi Everyone! I currently work in Singapore to develop clear hard coats (using UV curable binders) for use in the electronics sector. My education background is more organic and polymer chemistry inclined. Inevitably, my work scope involves developing novel coating formulations, attempting to duplicate the performance of competitors' coating formulations using basic raw materials, and synthesize new binders if needed. After working in this area for a few months, I realised the principles of formulating coatings and cosmetic formulations are very similar (dispersion theory, viscosity) but differ in their experimental considerations and end uses. Going through the BCC text together with one topic of this online course to date, has widened my perspective and opened potential chances to pursue cosmetic chemistry further. Looking forward to interact with budding cosmetic chemists in this forum and take it further from there.

  • Hi all!

my name is Marion Dove and I'm a LMT/Instructor and Nationally Certified Esthetician/Instructor.

I'm interested in learning more about cosmetic ingredients from people who tell the truth and not reps who just try to sell me something.

    great site Perry

  • Hello Marion!  Welcome to the forum.  Looking forward to some interesting discussion.

  • I have a couple of questions. One is that as a skin and laser therapist, I treat acne and rosacea. Salicylic acid is excellent for this however I have had trouble incorporating sal acid crystals into the products. A Pharmacist friend suggested 'softening' it with glycerine which I have not tried yet. Is there an easy way of blending 1-4% and up to 10% in an aqueous blend?
Another is that a doctor prescribed a 2% sal acid and sulfer aqueous cream. Am I able to make up this formula as well? I don't know where to get sulfer or what properties it has, and how it blends.
    Thanks.
  • Hello all. My name is Mark Fuller and I have been involved in Pharmaceutical Compounding since my Graduation from Pharmacy school back in 1987. I retired to the Charleston area and due to the lack of any real biotech, I took the opportunity to transition over to Cosmetic Formulation several years ago. I worked for a small failing manufacturer (it failed because the owner mismanaged the money, it had some real talent there) and as the business spiraled downward I took on more and more jobs as staffing decreased.
After this both positive/negative experience I gained several strong contacts in the Cosmetic Industry and I found that I loved the pure R&D of Formulation. I now own a Cosmetic Consulting business where I design the product and then stay on as the Project Manager. I am at heart a teacher so it allows me to mentor small accounts that want to launch their first product into the market. I realize that the whole process of choosing a Contract Manufacturer, components, negotiating pricing and the general concepts of the Industry can be daunting. I have successfully launched several National accounts and I currently represent 14 small Cosmetic companies.

  • Hi,

I'm alireza. thank you perry for your invitation and also your admission. your website ( chemist corner) is very usefull for me in my daily task. I'm very glad that now I can actively participate in your forum and have this  chance to learn more about cosmetic science.

  • Hello All,

I'm a formulator from Indonesia, just started in 2009 and still lack of experience. My background is from pharmacy, and I'm considering to get a master's degree but I have not made my mind yet because formulating is such a fun job! :D

At the moment I handle personal care products (shampoos, washes, etc). It would be very exciting to know much more formulators around the world and kinds of techniques in formulating.

    -Danilah-
  •  Hello, colleagues and everybody who takes an interest in cosmetics and this site!

I have been formulating for three years and I really like it. I am here because I think this site is very useful for everybody and for me too!!!

I will be so glad to find out much more knowledge and be helpful with my experience.

    Yulya.

  • Hello Yulya and Danilah.  Welcome to the discussion.  Feel free to start your own discussion about topics that interest you.
  • Hi, my name is Pamela, I’m happy for the opportunity to join the Chemist Corner.

I started on my cosmetic formulation journey back in 2005 with an idea to create lipstick in a lipbalm container.    I’ve been self taught through books, websites, forums such as this – but mostly I’ve learned from trial and error.   There has been so much to learn and since I worked on this project in my spare time between running a household, homeschooling three children and various volunteer activities, my research and development time frame has been extended for this project.

The past six years I’ve become quite intimate with my ingredients, working them up and down the percentage ranges, pushing limits here and there, adding ingredients and removing ingredients one at a time;  learning how to deal with bloom, agglomeration and rancidity issues.   I’m finally to the point where I have a good idea how to nudge a change that I want within the limits of my ingredient performance parameters.    Next to my husband, MS Excel is my best friend, lol!

Now that my children are transitioning to higher education, I have more time to devote to my passion.   I’m currently putting the finishing touches on my five color line, will probably launch with a lipstick first just because it’s easier to label ;-)

I’m looking forward to participating in the Chemist Corner forum, hope to learn more about ingredients and production processes.  Thank you for letting me join!

  • Hello Pamela!  Welcome to the forum.  Great story and I wish you good luck with the lipstick/lip balm line.  You'll have to be sure to let us know when it launches.
